Since ancient times chocolate has been revered and renown for its health giving properties. In our modern days science and research has been able to confirm the benefits of this most wonderful food.
Chocolate can truly be said to positively affect the mind body and soul. When needed it can stimulate, revive and energise the mind and body through its caffeine and energy content, and is a great source of phenylethamine, a natural mood enhancer which stimulates our body's own endorphins or "feel good" chemicals. Cocoa is rich in iron, proteins, zinc, potassium and magnesium. It is also rich in flavanoids or antioxidants, chemicals and minerals renown for their immune boosting and disease fighting properties.
Scientific research has also established that along with good dental hygiene, chocolate is good for teeth as it contains natural 'tannins' which inhibit the growth of plaque and bacteria. (It is also believed that it is better for teeth than sugared confectionary as it tends to be chewed and not sucked.)
However, one of the most uplifting recent discoveries (one that anyone who has given or received chocolates in the spirit of love might instinctively know), is that chocolate is officially good for the heart! Researches have found it contains 'procyanidin', a substance widely found in fruit and vegetables. It protects us from coronary heart disease and reduces the likelihood of blood clots. No wonder we instinctively love chocolate so much!
